Hospital Volunteers Offer Home Delivered Meals

Palos Community Hospital currently is accepting new participants for its Home Delivered Meals Program, which delivers meals to residents of Palos Heights, Palos Hills, Palos Park, Orland Park and Orland Hills that are home-bound, live alone and are unable to prepare their own meals.

The program offers recipients peace of mind because the meals are planned by hospital dietitians and prepared in the hospital kitchen. Participants receive nutritious, well-balanced meals delivered to their door between 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday thru Friday, by a caring volunteer. Meals are even delivered on holidays that occur during the week if the participant is not spending the day with loved ones.

Two meal options are available. A single hot meal plan costs $3.75 per day, or $75 for one month. Another option includes two meals, one of which is a hot meal and the other a sandwich, and costs $6 per day, or $120 for one month. Meals are offered on a six-week rotation.

"My father is 88 years old, and he's been able to live on his own and maintain some independence for the past four years because of the Palos Community Hospital Home Delivered Meals program," says Anita Burmila. "Not only is the food great, but I think the meals remind my dad to eat rather than just grab a cookie for lunch."

An added benefit to the program is that someone is making a delivery to the participant five days a week. If the recipient does not answer the door, the Volunteer will notify the participant's emergency contacts. If a volunteer discovers a situation that needs immediate attention, he or she will call 911 and wait with the client until an ambulance arrives. The Volunteer Department then notifies the participant's emergency contacts.
