Joint Conditions We Treat

Choose Palos for expert treatment of many joint-related injuries and illnesses, including:

  • Arthritis - Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid
  • Bursitis
  • Dislocation
  • Fractures

Joint Services

Your doctor will listen to a description of your symptoms, physically examine your joint and request an imaging procedure to help determine the reason for your joint pain. You’ll then receive personalized treatment recommendations that may involve one or more of these options:

  • Physical therapy and other rehabilitation services that help you safely increase your range of motion
  • Injections:
    • Steroids to manage pain
    • Hyaluronic Acid, a synthetic joint fluid used to treat knee osteoarthritis
  • Surgery to repair fractures and torn ligaments and replace damaged joints, sometimes using a minimally invasive, arthroscopic approach that reduces pain and recovery time

New Lease on Life

A few months ago, pain would stop Tom Teare in his tracks. But a hip replacement at Palos got Tom back to all the things he loves - music, bowling and babysitting his grandchildren. Read his story in our Perspective magazine.

Hip, Knee & Shoulder Replacement

If conservative treatments don’t relieve arthritis pain in your hip, knee or shoulder, you may qualify for joint replacement surgery at Palos. This procedure exchanges all or part of a damaged joint for an artificial implant to relieve discomfort and increase mobility. Your surgeon will replicate the unique structure of your joint as closely as possible, so your implant feels natural as possible. And you’ll benefit from the experience of the surgeons, who perform hundreds of joint replacement procedures every year.

Advanced Approaches for Joint Replacement

Whenever possible, we’ll perform the operation with a minimally invasive technique that speeds your recovery by using a shorter incision that affects fewer muscles. Your surgeon also may replace your joint with help from a computer, which precisely guides surgical tools and reduces the risk of postoperative complications.

Joint Replacement Procedures

Your surgeon will discuss joint replacement options with you and determine what approach may be best for you:

  • Hip replacement
    • Anterior hip replacement – Makes an incision from the front to the back
    • Posterior hip replacement – Makes an incision through the buttock muscles to reach the hip
  • Knee replacement
    • Total knee replacement – Exchanges the entire knee joint for a prosthesis
    • Partial knee replacement – Relieves pain felt on only one side of your knee
  • Shoulder replacement
    • Total shoulder replacement – Removes the joint and inserts a metal ball and plastic socket
    • Reverse total shoulder replacement – Implants a prosthetic socket and ball in the opposite locations of your natural socket and ball following a complete rotator cuff tear or unsuccessful traditional shoulder replacement

Preparing for Joint Replacement

Help your joint replacement procedure go smoothly by learning how to prepare for it and discovering what you can do to recover successfully. Take our 60-minute pre-surgery class and meet your orthopaedic care team, whom you’ll work with while regaining strength and range of motion after surgery. Also, pave the way for an easier recovery by learning simple strength-training exercises you can do at home in Palos’ free pre-habilitation program.

Recovering After Joint Replacement

Physical therapy often begins on the same day of your surgery and throughout your hospitalization. Once you’re ready for rehab on an outpatient basis, our Physical Therapy team is ready to help you continue your recovery to your fullest potential with services available at the hospital in Palos Heights and at the Palos Primary Center and Palos Health & Fitness Center both located in Orland Park.

Ask your therapist about improving your endurance and flexibility in a low-impact water therapy program or Gentle Yoga class at our Palos Health & Fitness Center.
