Inpatient Behavioral Health Services
Adults & Adolescents
There are times when the degree of individual suffering or impairment a person is experiencing requires the safe environment and immediate comprehensive treatment only available in a 24-hour inpatient care setting.
People turn to inpatient psychiatric treatment for help with a wide range of mental illnesses: individuals and families coping with the ravages of addiction, a young mother fighting depression, the victim of a traumatic event who can't seem to get over the pain of his past, an adolescent with self-destructive behaviors, a college student who is frightened and confused by strange voices and delusions, or an older adult who has become severely depressed because of increasing symptoms of dementia or losses due to aging.
Inpatient psychiatric care begins with a comprehensive diagnosis of the patient's condition by our team of psychiatric nurses, nutritionists, occupational therapists, social workers, medical physicians and attending psychiatrists. Then that diagnosis drives the development of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes interventions based on the individual needs of each patient. Palos Community Hospital incorporates best practices that include:
- Targeted Psycopharmacology
- Occupational Therapy
- Chemical Dependency Evaluations
- Dietary Evaluations
- Family Meetings
With the patient's permission, contact with friends and/or family are encouraged to provide input for improving diagnosis reliability and relapse prevention.
Palos Community Hospital is committed to providing each patient with a safe and restorative environment. One of the newest innovations on our inpatient unit is the addition of a Sensory Room, which provides a safe, nurturing treatment space where patients can use visual, tactile, proprioceptive and auditory stimulus to practice self-regulation and increase their awareness of the influence of sensation on everyday activities. Sensory activities include music, visual experiences of images from nature, positive and uplifting artwork, weighted blankets, rocking chairs and other self-soothing tools.
Inpatient hospitalization also can help reduce the stress of responsibility some patient's feel and allow the person to concentrate on recovery. As the crisis lessens and the person is better able to assume the challenge, Palos Community Hospital's Behavioral Health care team can help plan for discharge and the appropriate outpatient services that will support ongoing recovery after returning home. The goal of inpatient treatment is to promote a return to independent living as rapidly as possible.
