The American Academy of Pediatrics states that human milk is uniquely superior for infants and is the preferred food for all babies. Recognizing the significant health benefits breastfeeding provides for both mothers and babies, Palos Community Hospital supports breastfeeding mothers and their infants.
Learning to Breastfeed
Breastfeeding is a learned skill. Information, assistance and a great deal of support can help make the experience successful and rewarding. Registered Nurses who staff our Lactation Center are all International Board Certified Lactation Consultants with advanced training and skills in breastfeeding management.
Lactation Consultants focus on the needs of the nursing couple and are committed to promoting positive breastfeeding experiences. They provide professional and personalized education and support, as well as ongoing assistance, for establishing and maintaining a successful nursing relationship.
Lactation Consultants to Help You
After you give birth, you will be visited at least once a day by a lactation consultant to offer instruction and assistance to help you and your baby get off to a great start. After you and your baby go home, your lactation consultant will call you within one week to make sure breastfeeding is going smoothly. Outpatient visits also are available by appointment after leaving the hospital.
The Nursing Mom's Network provides ongoing support for those learning to breastfeed. Breastfeeding mothers share their experiences, and receive ongoing guidance and support from a Palos Community Hospital Lactation Consultant. For information on the Nursing Mom's Network, call (708) 226-2300.
Breast Pump Products
Electric breast pumps are available for both rental and purchase. Lactation Consultants also have many other products to support your breastfeeding experience, some of which are ideal for working moms.
