Palos Community Hospital offers a comprehensive Lymphedema Program to help manage and control the symptoms of the condition. The program is offered through our Rehabilitative Services Department and is staffed with physical therapists that are specially trained in lymphedema management.

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition characterized by increased swelling, most commonly in the arms and legs, which is caused by the build-up of protein-rich lymph fluid in a specific region of the body. Lymphedema generally develops after lymph nodes in the affected area are injured or removed, as often occurs during cancer and radiation treatment. However, it also can be caused by venous insufficiency, or present as a genetic condition in children and young adults. Without proper mamangement, lymphedema can result in open wounds, infections and difficulty with day-to-day activities.

The preferred method of lymphedema management is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). The goals of this non-invasive treatment are to reduce swelling of the limb while restoring tissue softness. Patient and family education area critical part of the program to ensure adequate long-term management.
